The smile is a complex facial expression that is associated with beauty.
The gums, lips and teeth are the three main structures that affect your smile.
Excessive gingival display when smiling is known as a gummy smile. In a normal smile, the gingival exposure between the gingival margin of the upper central incisors and the lower edge of the upper lip is approximately 1-2 mm. The aesthetics of the smile is affected when the gingival exposure between the gum and the lip exceeds 4 mm.
The contractility of the levator labii muscles is attenuated through the use of botulinum toxin, an alternative non-surgical method in cases of gummy smile induced by hyperfunctional muscles.
On the other hand, lip filler and myomodulation with hyaluronic acid are also effective treatments for a gummy smile.
