Otoplasty is performed to reposition the ears closer to the head and correct other aesthetic problems and asymmetries.
The intervention can be performed at any time after the patient turns six years old, since then the ear cartilage is firm and has reached an almost adult size. In adults, the intervention can be performed at any time.
Under local anesthesia, a minimal incision is made behind the ear (approximately 1 cm long) and its cartilage is weakened. Permanent sutures are then placed to maintain the new fold of the antihelix, which do not have to be removed. The surgery lasts approximately between 30 and 60 minutes.
Some discoloration and swelling occur for approximately two weeks, and the ears may be tender for several weeks after the procedure. A headband is worn only at night for approximately six months to protect the ears while sleeping.
