This condition is caused by sharp edges of the nail that grow into the surrounding skin folds. Children are usually present once the surrounding skin becomes infected and painful.
Predisposing factors include ill-fitting shoes, excessive trimming of the lateral nail plate, and trauma.
Conservative treatment must first be instituted before considering surgical treatment.
